A Busy Day at the Cormorant Colony

A colony of nesting Brandt’s Cormorants is a busy place. The birds place their nests on the ground in close proximity to neighboring nests, leading to a rather chaotic atmosphere. At any given moment you can witness nest-building, stealing of nest material, bickering among neighbors, elaborate courtship displays and mating.

Below is a video of a cormorant bringing in nest material, followed by mating with his partner, as others nearby go about their business:

And in this second video, a cormorant, eager to start building a nest, carries nest material up a steep cliff, only to drop it at the last moment and have it snatched up by another.
